If you are thinking seriously about suicide, it is recommended that you seek help in person, or at least, on the telephone, not on the internet. We have some resource pages listed below where you can find such help.

Befrienders International is a gateway to 1,700 suicide and emotional issues-related  helplines worldwide on the internet; web site is in English, Spanish, Dutch, French, Arabic, German, amd Portugese. They also have a service that offers emergency counseling via email for people who need someone to talk to now, in connection with The Samaratins and services in other languages for people in many countries.

Young people can call the Covenant House Nine Line for confidential counseling, and referrals if they are suicidal, running away, or have any other problems they need to talk about, toll - free 1-800-999-9999

Mental Disability Rights International is a large NGO (non-governmental organization) that advocates for people with mental illnesses/ disabilities around the world

Mental Disability Advocacy Center - works to protect and promote the human rights of people with mental disabilities around the world

The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law has defended the rights of people with psychiatric disabilities/ mental illnesses in the United States for 30 years and has a very informative website

NAMI: the National Association for the Mentally Ill is the largest organization in the United States devoted to protecting the rights of people whose lives are affected by serious mental illnesses. They do direct advocacy work to help individuals as well as providing information, referrals, education, and public policy advocacy

NARPA the National Assocation for Rights, Protection and Advocacy works to stop abuse of people with mental disabilities in institutions

National Mental Health Association in the U.S. does advocacy, research and education work for mental illnesses

Handling Your Psychiatric Disability in Work and in School is a website with information specifically related to the Americans with Disabilities Act and the accomodations people with psychiatric disabilties can get in schools and workplaces

National Association for Mental Health and Juvenile Justice works to improve the way young people in the juvenile justice system who have mental illnesses are treated

National Resource Center on Homelessness and Mental Illness specifically addresses the homelessness in the lives of people with mental illnesses in the U.S

On Our Own of Maryland a mental health education and advocacy organization in the state of Maryland

Resource Center on Discrimination and Stigma this is a website from the National Mental Health Service Center of the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services that provides information on addressing the stigma against people with mental illnesses


Developmental, Neurological and Learning Disabilities:

The ARC is a large organization in the U.S. that works for children and adults with cognitive, developmental and intellectual disabilities. They have branches in many areas of the United States and do great advocacy work

ADDvance is a resource site for women and girls with ADD or ADHD including articles, resources, and information about a National Center for Gender Issues and ADHD

The ADD and ADHD Information Library offers information on diagnosis and treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

CHADD: Children and Adults with ADD is a large organization in the United States with a website that has research and interactive forums. CHADD also has a national call center now:  1-800-233-4050

The Attention Deficit Disorder Association is another national organization which has a large website with articles, research, information on "coaching" and other treatments, and a section specifically for Women with ADD

ADHD: Taking Control Through Knowledge is a site by Brandi Valentine which links to many email lists for people with ADHD and their family members, has a collection of articles, a newsletter and advice on dealing with ADHD

Tourette's Syndrome "Plus" is a large website addressing both Tourette's Syndrome and many related other conditions which may occur along with Tourrette's, including ADHD, mood disorders, obsessions and compulsions, sleep disorders, and more

Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation has information on OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), screening, treatment, related disorders, and support groups

OCD Links a collection of links on information, medication, entertainment, etc.

Autism Spectrum Disorders on Autism, Asperger's Syndrome and "spectrum disorders", also called on this site "oops, wrong planet syndrome"

General Self-Help, Support Groups, Treatment, etc:

The Self-Help Sourcebook Online of the American Self Help Clearinghouse is a huge database listing support groups for all kinds of problems. Many do not have websites, but the locations and phone numbers are provided.

HOPE: Harvesting Our Personal Efforts is a website that offers information on good self-help practices, consumer advocacy for mental health and resources on recovery and self-help

Healthy Place.Com is a large, excellent site on mental health. It includes online journals (you can create one), newsletters, forums, chat rooms and moderated chat events. Some chat rooms are specifically for abuse survivors and people with Dissociative Identity Disorder

The National Empowerment Center is for "people who have been labeled with a mental illness". It connects you to support groups and events around the U.S.

Recovery, Inc. has support groups for people with a variety of mental illnesses and problems. They operate under the idea that there are "no hopeless cases".

Therapist Finders - a huge list of sites that you can use to find a therapist near you, from mental health databases to professional associations. Just about every way to find a therapist online is listed here. From Hope E. Morrow's Trauma Central site.

Depression

The National Depressive and Manic Depressive Association provides information, does education and advocacy work, and holds free support groups around the United States and in a few other countries. Call toll-free in the United States 1-800-826-3632

DRADA: Depression and Related Disorders Association at Johns Hopkins Hospital has support groups in Baltimore Maryland but also has site with information and some writings by psychiatrist and author Kay Redfield Jamison who has bipolar disorder

Wings of Madness: A Depression Guide is a large website with informative articles, articles based on personal experience, information on joining usenet groups, ICQ chat and message boards, and other resources. One section is specifically related to women. This site has been online for several years and is quite large.

Pendulum Resources: Your Guide to Bipolar Disorders on the Web is a large site with information and links to other resources which has been online for several years

Depressed Anonymous has 12-step groups in some parts of the United States

Andrew's Depression Site is not specifically for women but it is one of the most comprehensive sites on depressive disorders that I have come across

Eating Disorders

The Something Fishy Website on Eating Disorders is the most comprehensive ED site on the web. It has lists of treatment providers, a wealth of helpful information, chat rooms and organized chats, and many message boards. Anyone who has an eating disorder should visit the memorial page for women who have not made it; this can remind you why you need to fight for your health.

Body Image Betrayal and Related Issues (BIBRI) is another excellent site that addresses eating disorders, their causes, and problems that often coincide with them. It is also home of the Unbinding the Body Betrayed webring.

Hugs International is an organization with resources and information on non-dieting "for people seeking a lifestyle without diets"

The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance is a human rights organization dedicated to ending stigmatizing and discrimination

Size Wise give you information on how to have a healthy life at any size

The Real Women Project celebrates the diverse beauty of women and offers a different outlook on women's bodies from the socially enforced one we often see

Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention is an excellent U.S. organization that started national Eating Disorders Awareness Week and is dedicated to the prevention of eating disorders, unlike any other organization in this country

Alcoholism and Drug Addiction

The Alcoholics Anonymous international web site is in English, French, and Spanish and can give you listings of support groups wherever you are.

Adult Children of Alcoholics also has an international site with listings of groups for adults dealing with the effects of having alcoholic parents.

Alanon is another twelve-step groups for people in relationships with alcoholics and the web site also lists Alateen groups for teenagers with alcoholic parents.

Narcotics Anonymouse World Service Office can direct you to their groups

Self Mutilation (Self Injury, Self Harm, Cutting, etc.)

Secret Shame: Self Injury Information and Support is one of the few web sites in existence on self mutilation, although this addictive act is not uncommon, especially among abuse survivors. This site offers a chat room and the Bodies Under Seige email list for support.

Self Harm Information and Resources from Befrienders International includes advice and connections for people who need help immediately

Self Injury: Information and Resources is a site from the U.K. that has coping tips.

Never Give Up: There Is Always a Way has coping tips for self injurers

Mollykat's tips on distracting yourself for people who are addicted to self mutilation

SAFE Alternatives is a treatment program for self-injury. Their web site apppears to be gone.. You can call toll-free: 1-800-DONT-CUT

Trauma, Dissociation, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Healing Hopes: Together in Healing is an interactive forum with literature, chat room and message boards for people with Dissociative Identity Disorder

I Survive.Org - Abuse Survivors Learning to Thrive has chat, message forums, personal stories and information

The Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Sanctuary has clinical information, message boards, chat, and news about PTSD

Trauma Central by Hope E. Morrow, MA, MFT, CTS is most likely one of the most comprehensive resources for trauma information of any kind on the web. Just about everything you can imagine related to trauma is here, including extensive articles on
PTSD, dissociation, and all forms of abuse of children and adults.

The National Center for PTSD is and excellent source of articles on many topics related to PTSD in children, adolescents, and adults who have gone through various types of trauma. It is also home of the PILOTS database, which is said to be the largest collection of PTSD research in the world, and you can search it online.

Sidran is an organization located in Lutherville, MD that provides information on traumatic memories, dissociation, PTSD and related issues on it's web site and through mail-order.

"The Spectrum of Dissociative Disorders - An Overview of Diagnosis and Treatment" - by Joan Turkus, M.D.

The Wounded Healer Journal has forums online for survivors of traumatic experiences, including, but not limited to, child abuse. There are many forums on specific topics related to abuse. The website also has a huge number of articles and related links.

Many Voices is a print newsletter on trauma and dissociation. The web site has information and sample articles.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder research articles from Internet Mental Health - has a large list of related topics to search through

Dissociative Identity Disorder/Mulitple Personality Disorder Information Pages is a large, informative site by a person with DID

NEEDID is the Network to Explore and Express Dissociative Identity Disorder and other trauma related dissociative disorders

WeRMany has chat rooms, message forums, and many articles for people with dissociative disorders

Mosaic Minds is a site with many forums for people with Dissociative Identity Disorder and for those who care about them

Healing Hopes: Together in Healing has information, chat, and many forums for people with DID

Shattered Selves includes information specifically about co-conscious DID

Split Angels has information on DID and a chat room

The Gathering Place is a very creative site on DID created by someone who does not consider it to be a disorder

Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Disorder:

Schizophrenia.com is a very thorough site with blogs by people with Schizophrenia, message boards for mental health consumers, family and friends, and research information

Inside My Mind: Life with Schizophrenia is a blog by a young woman living with this illness

DAISIES: Dedicated Advocacy, Individual Support, Independence, and Education for Schizophrenia and related illnesses is a self-help organization for people with this illness and related illnesses. It has regular meetings in Clearwater, Florida, as well as an online support group for people with mental illnesses everywhere to find support and discuss advocacy ideas.It was created by Jen, who co-founded Sick Chicks and Twisted Sisters and currently maintains this website.

Anxiety, Panic, Personality "Disorders", and other problems

The Borderline Personality Disorder Sanctuary has a chatroom, articles and other resources for people diagnosed with this disorder.

Kathi's Mental Health Review has clinical information and advice on Borderline Personality Disorder, Dissociative Identity Disorder, and other personality disorders (please note I personally am not endorsing any of this information; most of these "disorders" are always the result of abuse)
